BREAKING: Emma Raducanu has won the US Open women's final, defeating Leylah Annie Fernandez in a thrilling clash between two of the most captivating young stars of this year's tournament.

NEW YORK -- A remarkable run to the US Open final ended in disappointment Saturday _ and a measure of controversy _ for Canada's Leylah Fernandez.

But as she's done throughout the tournament, just when it began to look like she was flagging, an acrobatic backhand or blistering down-the-line forehand would find a corner of the court just outside Raducanu's reach. Other times, a fearsome cross-court forehand out of nowhere would send Raducanu diving in vain, a wry smile crossing Fernandez's face.

The normally emotive Fernandez seemed almost subdued throughout the match, allowing herself only modest little fist-pumps, despite the encouragement of a New York crowd that was clearly smitten with both young stars. Fernandez could be seen arguing with officials about the decision to grant the time-out, particularly at a moment in the match when she was clearly riding a wave of momentum. The 19-year-old Fernandez, a Montreal native, has enthralled the crowds in New York with her unexpected run to her first career Grand Slam final.
