An Ottawa city councillor is hoping to throw the city’s support behind a New Democrat MPP’s private member’s bill, calling for highrises to have emergency power for elevators, lights and water.

“During the derecho in May 2022, many residents in parts of Ward 9 were among the most seriously impacted by the storm's related power outages. Residents living in high-rises in the Parkwood Hills area experienced unique and dangerous hardships,” he wrote.

Speaking on Newstalk 580 CFRA’s Ottawa Now with Kristy Cameron on Thursday, Ashdown says she’s still dealing with the trauma of her experience in May. Ashdown says she shared her story to ensure what she went through in May doesn’t happen to anyone else.

$5k to $10k a wise expenditure. Also should be mandatory generators for gas stations

Thus making housing even more expensive

Great way to drive up building costs. Affordability what?

Another thing that has me perplexed.. For all my working career I've installed emergency backup lighting at 9 to 10 ft. from the ground. When smoke fills a building, weak lighting at 10 ft. is useless. The light is needed at floor level.

And people are complaint housing cost is high. This is going to further increase housing cost lol

I 100% agree, any building over 4 floors should have an NG backup generator. Elevators, heating system, hall lights, fire alarm, & ALL smoke detectors should be continuous when the power fails.

Gee .. should already be a requirement?

That would be nice

Good, yes, actually surprising this is not already required. I wish the same for air conditioning.

related and pertinent

It should be in the Canadian building code.

I'm sure landlords will be happy to pay for safety and will definitely comply and maintain these services.

Ultimately renters , buyers pay for it.

Okay but stop complaining about the rental costs increasing.

I'm actually shocked this does not already exist.

Looks like another Backrooms video.

Yes put the rents higher why not.

You mean diesel generators.

Colby Cosh: Jokes about sending tanks into Ottawa elucidate the ruling-class psycheThe ministers are blowing off their conversation as mere banter. But jokes about sending in tanks are psychologically telling It only reinforces the view that they have nothing but contempt for ordinary Canadians. They're a source of taxes. Nothing more. I don’t think the Liberal Government was joking. Justlisten to Lamenti!
