OPINION:'Canada simply needs more strong, local candidates from all parties. We need people with experience and conviction who are willing to put their name on the ballot. This is how we continue building a better and stronger Can,' Matt Triemstra writes.

In the last election, Canadians sent 338 members of Parliament, some new but most returning, to Ottawa to represent them. These 338 Canadians won the right to represent a riding in Parliament, and their hard work was rewarded with the title, salary, and benefits of an MP.I count myself fortunate to have been among them.

In fact, by meeting me for coffee after the election to share stories from the campaign trail, my local NDP competitor was a source of support. He asked me seriously how I was doing, having had the experience himself. We need more of this in politics. Even though running can sometimes seem futile, our democracy is better served when credible Canadians put their names forward. Yes, the party leaders carry the day, but it’s the local candidates who make it possible for the leader to win. They’re the ones whom voters either punish or reward at the polls.

To those contemplating running, do it. Nothing can prepare you for it. Find a team of people to support you, find a campaign manager who inspires you, and leave your heart on the field. With a minority government in place, it’s never too early to start preparing for the next election.
