StarEditorial: Canadians have seen the curtain pulled back on secretive police and political deliberations and they have winced at the incompetence, inaction, intelligence failures and infighting on display.

We didn’t spend the last six weeks seeking answers about whether the invocation of the Emergencies Act was politically popular. Awas not probing whether it was effective in clearing Ottawa streets and preventing further border blockades.

That answer will be delivered by Justice Paul Rouleau but Friday Trudeau became the rare prime minister toat a public inquiry and he made a compelling argument for using that legislative club. He offered certitude and an assurance that he remains serene to this day about his decision. Like his ministers who testified all week, he deserves high marks for accountability.

Trudeau insisted that the Emergencies Act does not rely on a CSIS definition of a security threat and that the decision to invoke it rests with him and his cabinet, after receiving input from a variety of sources. This is not a question of semantics. It is a crucial marker for any future governments contemplating using such a legislative tool.

He said vehicles had been weaponized, children were being used as human shields, police didn’t know what was in the trucks and a cache of weapons had been stolen in Peterborough . There were concerns of violence with counter-protesters determined to take back their streets, CSIS was reporting on political extremists in the crowd and there were worries about a lone wolf actor.Even then he hesitated, knowing the historical importance of what he was about to do last Feb.

I would say it’s government being government in an unusual situation. Is this your first day on the job?

althiaraj althiaraj would you kiss Trudeaus feet? Hi best question.

So convoy protesters are racist homophobes, science deniers? How would you describe the citizens of China protesting en masse asking for Xi to resign? Are they racist homophobes?

althiaraj Ditto media coverage of, like 7, on going health crises. 8 if you count the children's hospitals, ICUs and ERs crisis not being covered properly right now.

Trudeau lied under oath .. nuf said

YOU ARE PART OF IT! You spread lies about truckers being 'violent', and 'foreign interference', you lied about the protest itself, and cheered the government on when they trampled a woman in a walker with horses. you are PART of the corruption and incompetence

Cabinet privilege was not waived. We have no idea what definition they used to invoke the act, no idea what process occurred to change the can one unilaterally change the law. What was the police plan that Trudeau discorded without even looking at?

Let's move on and learn from this situation, and plan ahead for the next/another similar event. There is a lot of unrest through out the world these days. There was unrest with the Spanish Flu in 1917 as well.

Considering the EA from day 1 was most shocking. It's feeling more and more like China and not Canada.

They have refused to disclose the “legal advice” they relied upon to enact the EA.l and have asked us to “trust them.” After SNC, JWR, Aga Khan and more ethics violation as than any other PM in history why would we trust anything the say? Liberal media circling the wagon folks.

This dad has a message for your pretty boy Justin, the pathological liar, who declared under oath that he didn't call the unvaccinated names and who also claims that the vaccines are safe and effective, another fat lie.

…amongst the country’s leadership.

First time I have agreed with the Star

From the creator of the divide

Actually the Government threw police under the bus, it was the Government that was secretive and incompetent.

He may make mistakes, but at least we can all agree that masks work

That and that curtain was not opened up fully. The PM, cabinet & bureaucrats had no issues smugly claiming cabinet confidentiality. The purpose of the inquiry was to ensure the legal requirements were met, not if feelings were hurt.

We are also noticing that they are as transparent as mud and that cannot be forgotten or forgiven

The Chinese benefit from a self destructive, divisive Government in Canada, so their election interference benefits Liberals. So the Liberals have no desire to stop this interference.
