Opinion: 'The Emergencies Act should never be imposed lightly and the threshold for its use must be the highest possible,' writes the Star Editorial Board. 'Our leaders and police must also learn from this and ensure we never get to this point again.'

Justin Trudeau’s invocation of the Emergencies Act last winter had long ago found support among CanadiansNow that decision has received the weighty endorsement of Justice Paul Rouleau though he cautioned it was a conclusion he reached “with reluctance.”of the factors leading to the chaos of last year’s occupation of Ottawa and blockading of international borders

. It was, Rouleau said in his report of the Public Order Emergencies Commission, a crisis born of a lack of anticipation and collaboration. The fault with the anticipation begins with the Ottawa Police Service which ignored intelligence indicating that this trucker convoy was a different challenge than the regular protests those living in the national capital know so well. Former Chief Peter Sloly thought he was going to deal with a traffic problem. Rouleau concluded that the police operational plan “counted on the best and did not plan for the worst.” Ottawa police were also beset with communications and strategic breakdowns.

Again, there is much blame to pass around, but the lion’s share clearly falls to Premier Doug Ford and Sylvia Jones, then the provincial solicitor-general.

It was a peaceful protest (fundamental democratic rught). Canadians from all walks of life , united coast to coast, against a government that is destroying our democracy.

If you make peaceful revolution impossible, you make violent revolution inevitable. -John Fitzgerald Kennedy. That observation is not unique to the United States. It is the lesson of history accross the world. Good luck Canadians. The next part gets way uglier.

Your benefactor has lowered the bar for it’s use. Next time it may be a government you’re not in lock-step with.

Yeah. Dont shit on us and we wont protest. Easy.

« Ensure we never get to such a point » Do we talk about what the government did to get people to such a point?

Shut down your paper.

It didn’t help that the media did nothing but nod approvingly when it was happening.

You seem to be advocating the petty dictators actions

The threshold wasn’t met. No CSIS threat definition was met as required by the EA. That the government can arbitrarily decide otherwise should be a big deal. I hope the courts rule where Rouleau feared to tread. Yes the protest needed to end but accountability must be served.

The threshold for its past use was the lowest possible. Incompetence.

thankfully they exceeded the requirement of being terrorists

The threshold has been reduced to a point where every government can use it at any time.

Trudeau used the emergency act to create fear and to grow Government power and control. His party runs the entire justice system, he eliminated the independence of the AG and the RCMP and has dozens of Liberal Party aligned Judges.

The media must learn the lessons of the convoy. The media's complicity in the demonization campaign is a big reason why the convoy was necessary.

Toronto Star media propaganda

Nah, government now has grounds to freeze bank accounts, trample people, and use overhanded militarized action on protests that the sitting PM disagrees with.

Don’t care what the “editorial board” at the Star thinks - the use of the EA in this case had the lowest threshold imaginable! Clausal failure on the part of the government and JT!

It's only the start

No protest. It was a coup attempt.

If that's the case then why isn't the MSM screaming about the bias in the latest EA enquiry report?

Tickety-boo not going to learn shit

The damage has been done the Liberal and NDP way - they apologize after the fact, maybe-CBC, CTV and Global support them-the PM dives into the bunker or leaves the country whenever confronted- the money moves for votes or just totally vanishes-questions are never answered-enjoy

The criminals must learn from their crimes. Blocking roads is illegal.

Didnt you hear? It met the high criteria for the first usage of the emergencies act...ever

The police failed because many of their members put their political beliefs ahead of their sworn duties. Their leadership failed because Conservative Premiers used the Convoy to try unseat PM Trudeau. The Convoy was a right-wing conspiracy.

All that’s learned from it by them is we can do whatever we want and nothing will come of it -

EDITORIAL: Trudeau ignores China syndromeThe report Friday that China engaged in election interference in 2021 as well as 2019 is disturbing. It makes no sense China would help out Trudeau because his govt arrested Meng Wanzhou and imposed sanctions on China. We're being lied to people. Think about it. PS: I'm not a Trudeau fan JT is an illegitimate PM

EDITORIAL: Trudeau ignores China syndromeThe report Friday that China engaged in election interference in 2021 as well as 2019 is disturbing. Why would China interfere in our 'elections'? You cant vote against the new normal, the 'opposition parties' are opposition in name only.

Globe editorial: The failures of politics, and empathy, before the Emergencies ActThe divisions that led to the Freedom Convoy and an unprecedented crackdown still linger What a load of horse hockey! Nobody wanted or needed the clownvoy! Much respect to the PM for enacting the emergency powers to rid our streets of this trash. Too bad doug ford wasn't pushed to the curb last election, for his total lack of anything. Cheers, happy family day! Absolute nonsense, partisan lies and shameful disrespect for the rule of law from the G&M. The Cons who allied themselves with the convoy of morons did this to themselves. The Nazi scum and their pals who defiled our beautiful city a year ago deseve scorn and jail, not empathy. Why do you put a picture of the ONLY a politician who did the right thing?
