Dozens turned away from Toronto shelters each night, new data suggests

“More and more I am finding that you call and then you are on hold to even talk to a human being for a long time. Then you get somebody and they say call back in an hour, there is no spaces available for men, or for women, or for a trans person, or whatever is requested. And a number of people I work with don’t have phones themselves, they are poor,” Greg Cook, who is an outreach worker with Sanctuary Ministries of Toronto, told CP24.com. “What that means is that when the drop-in closes at 9 p.

He said that the full extent of the problem isn’t even captured by the data given and there is no way to know how many people “don’t even bother to try anymore.” Gord Tanner, who is the acting general manager of SSHA, was not made available for an interview to discuss the data.

They dont want the bed, just the tax money working people have to pay so they can have enough drugs for the day. Good excuse to make people feel they have to pay more.

That's sad no beds available at shelters they'll freeze in winter time they can die out there they need more affordable housing thank God was in shelter icouldnt handle been like them was in shelter 14 months it wasn't easy but I was happy when I got my own place 😀

I’m walking amongst the homeless on a daily basis. It’s mental illness and drug addiction that makes a percentage of the homeless unable to function and make any rational decisions. I dare Trudeau to start taking his narcissistic selfies with these people?

Strange because most homeless say they are camping out because they just don't feel safe within the shelter system. The government is about to unveil a plan to house these ppl and I think it is going to involve placing them into mixed use residential buildings.

This social issue needs to be addressed ASAP.

All homeless people are not the same. There are some that have a mental illness or are addicts and then there are some that are currently down on their luck. You can treat all these people the same as they have different needs.
