The City of Ottawa says a late event application is why Ottawa’s downtown streets will go without a St. Patrick’s Day parade for the fifth straight year. The last time a St. Patrick's Day parade was held by the Irish Society in Ottawa was in 2019. Since then, the society says the pandemic, finances and a lack of volunteers has been behind the parade's cancellation. The City of Ottawa says a late event application is why Ottawa's downtown streets will go without a St.
The city says it received an application from the Irish Society of the National Capital Region for the mid-March parade on Valentine's Day. Tracey Dixon, vice president of the Irish Society and the festival's, said city officials "did everything they could" to help the parade march on."It was determined — due to the limited resources of the police because of protests that happen on weekends and having to work in the market area — we were unable to get enough staffing," she said.
She said the Irish Society works "almost immediately after the last parade" to ensure the success of the next year's and that it was difficult hearing another St. Patrick's Day would pass without green-cladded spectators lining the streets.
