The outgoing SIU head had raised concerns about the new legislation, which he said could ‘completely subvert’ the agency’s independence and open the door to ‘political interference.’

A recruitment process is under way for a new leader for Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit, with its current director’s appointment set to expire at the end of this month.

During his tenure, Mr. Loparco has been outspoken about the importance of police oversight. Just last week, he raised concerns about Premier Doug Ford’s new Comprehensive Ontario Police Services Act – which he said could “completely subvert” the agency’s independence and open the door to “political interference.”

“This would completely subvert the SIU's independence and its police oversight mission,” Mr. Loparco wrote. “I strongly recommend that the word ‘criminal’ be struck from the section. To do otherwise would be to go backwards.”

Chris Selley: Ontario PCs will regret eliminating child advocateThis is one of the Doug Ford government’s least explicable and very worst decisions Oh yeah, lets keep on spending, inventing new positions. Kids have plenty of advocates.....how about their parents, if they can be dragged away from their entertainments instead of raising them proper? That would require integrity and shame. Sadly I haven't seen any in the Ontario PCs. Child advocate could have stayed if fordnation had enough courage to get rid of CFS instead

Doug Ford’s cellphone distraction - Macleans.caTabatha Southey: Ontario’s cellphone ban is the 'Buck-a-Beer' of education policy. All catchphrase. No cattle. Fordnotion (sic) For Certain People. Certainly worth a read. Perhaps one of fordnation caucus enablers or supporters will read it to The Leader of The People, on their fake news channel. Can’t wait for the mandatory applause in the legislature. Do better. It would be a good thing, speaking as someone who managed kids of this age on a number of industrial solar installations- they couldn't stay off their phones- moving heavy equipment, and other serious safety issues ignored-no problem for the neurotic Southey's of the world huh?
