Investigators from The Northern Tornado project at Western University in London, Ontario, arrived in Ottawa on Friday to begin analyzing the event using ground and drone surveys as well as collecting evidence from witnesses.“We do have some videos where people are looking in one direction at a tornado then saying, ‘Oh look over here. There’s another one!’” said David Sills, executive director of the Northern Tornadoes Project.
The second and more serious twister touched down at 1:19 p.m. near Elevation and Cambrian roads, tracking in a curving northward path for nearly five kilometres. The researchers said they will continue to examine photos and video from the scene to refine the tornadoes’ paths. The first tornado may have even started west of Highway 416.
A third tornado also touched down at 1:19 p.m. near Mirabel, Quebec, about 160 kilometres east of Ottawa and was seen by a meteorologist at Mirabel Airport. Researchers found downed trees and structures damaged in the area but can’t say for certain if the damage was caused by the tornado. It is the first tornado to be reported in Quebec this year.
