Gregory Joseph MacNeil was a hero for his family who believed in helping those in need whenever he could.

Monica's mother, Emmalene, also worked there as a cook and a baker. Monica's father had died and when the couple married, Greg committed to his wife and her five children."When he married my mom, he had a ready-made family," said Monica."He didn't treat us any differently. He treated us as if we were his own."

There was one thing Greg wouldn't do with his children or grandchildren, though. He wouldn't talk about his experiences serving overseas with the West Nova Scotia Regiment.Greg was 18 years old and working at the Sydney Steel Plant during the Second World War. He told the Cape Breton Post in 2019 he decided to enlist in the war effort after a number of his friends and older brother joined the Merchant Navy.
