Aiello was being treated for a sudden illness at a medical facility in New Jersey when he suffered an infection related to the treatment

The actor, who is best known for his supporting roles in movies such as Bang the Drum Slowly and The Godfather Part II in the ’70s, died Thursday night, his family told TMZ.

Most notably, he scored a Best Supporting Oscar nomination for his role as pizza store owner Sal in Spike Lee’s, Do the Right Thing. Aiello, who was also a singer and Broadway actor, is survived by three of his four children – his son actor Danny Aiello III, died in 2010 of pancreatic cancer – and wife of 64 years, Sandy.
