WE Charity controversy sheds light on questions of accountability for NGOs operating overseas

The controversy around WE Charity in Canada is opening the door to a public discussion about whether WE -- and groups like it -- actually help the African communities where they operate.

The charity's programs in countries such as Kenya, Tanzania and Ecuador will continue "as long as possible" the organization has said. In 2018, WE Charity U.S. spent US$5.8 million on domestic programing with another US$6 million going to Canada. That year US$8.5 million went to Asia, Africa and Latin America.

WE said allocations from its international program "are deployed in several ways, often directly from Canada, such that the spending may not show up as coming from the charity in Kenya itself." The organization said it also purchases medical supplies in Canada and the U.S. to send to Kenya. "To be clear, the team is not just a 'single employee' in each country, but rather one formal representative is assigned per country to be responsible for oversight and working with local staff," it said.

One of WE's focuses has been so-called voluntourism, a practice where people from countries like Canada -- usually youth -- pay to volunteer overseas. ME to WE, WE Charity's for-profit affiliate, is an operator of voluntourism trips.

All that additional finding Truedoh is giving Canada's MSN, an they still can't figure it out.

You mean In down town Toronto where they bought all that 50 million in real estate

CTV News? Or Liberal Party propaganda rag?

Only after they line their own pockets

Probably much like the Clinton Foundation- make a promise to build a hospital- take in donations from around the World- no hospital built and the money vanishes- then daughter has a big wedding funded by the Foundation

They help themselves to millions

WeScam

I don't think so, but we could check with Haiti they would know

No! They don’t! They are like Mr. PM and Mr. Bill M. All they care is their money and their lives.

Yes they help overseas communities, right after they help themselves

Ask Haitians

Let's ask Haiti.

No they just steal from hard working people and then is pocketed by scumbag families like the Trudeau's. If you voted liberal you are a peice of sh*t

No, they don't help at all.

I would love to know

'They are accountable to self-appointed boards' -there's your answer.

CTV is the EnemyOfThePeople

Great question? Maybe you should look into it and report bAck.

Scam on a higher level

Taxpayers money laundering

Enemy of the people

CTV definitely knows the answer to this.

Not till the organizers get their cut first.

WE connected to Clinton Foundation and we know how they stole Billions of dollars from Haiti.

No they don't We Charity exploited Africa and was involved in forced child labor

HeatherPaddle No, they spent the money on personal properties in toronto and a resort in africa

No one can tell for sure. There's no accountability framework for NPOs except their own CEOs, boards, etc. They help to some degree but there's no way to check if they do what they say they do fully.

How the hell does it help ANYBODY when millions are funneled to the PM's family members instead of the people that need it

It would appear that the money flows from Canada back to Canada in a series of moves meant to deceive the tax man

MoneyLaundering 101

F’ no, they do enough for some ads and then bilk naive guilt ridden Liberals

JailKielburgers

Is it really a scandal though? I still don't get the outrage but I guess it helps you get clicks..

The brothers are probably pedophiles, like Justin and his many pedophile friends!!😡😡😡...What is it with liberals and children/youth

The amount of money stolen by these guys over the years must be staggering !

NGOs are corrupt to the core

I didn't understand it then and I don't understand it now but do keep talking about it.

What about politicians funneling millions of dollars to them?

And Prime Ministers Operating domestically

Southern Alberta group plans to operate its own supervised drug siteA grassroots movement aimed at curbing overdose deaths in Lethbridge, Alta. is asking for volunteers to help but warns of significant 'backlash from the community.' Say what? Isn't that like having melanoma, but continuing to book appointments at the tanning salon because it makes you feel warm before you leave and shiver? This is a good idea. It gives people somewhere safe to go and keeps the public safer too. Decriminalisation of drugs would be best scenario but this is definitely a good step in helping those who do use drugs to use them safely.

Chris Selley: If Trudeau wants to help our COVID response, here's something better than empty boastingHealth Canada says it's willing to consider rapid, 'at-home' testing. There is little evidence it's actually considering it If cselley wants this pandemic to go better he should help out himself instead of crying about others that have helped half of Canada already. Does anyone actually read this news paper? It’s sad to see, really! Selly argues that his opinion is more knowledgeable than that of Health Canada scientists and that Cabinet should interfere with regulatory decisions. Please spare us from such insight and wisdom.
