Even with some notable departures, the Maple Leafs' refreshed roster looks more balanced — and certainly deeper — than the one that bowed out before reaching official playoff status in 2020. On paper, here’s how the pieces stack up. (via lukefoxjukebox)

Dubas took a cleaver to his middle-class wingers and went bananas rifling through the UFA bargain bin.

Russian import Barabanov is already in Toronto training for his NHL debut. Vesey and Simmonds, low-risk signings, arrive with something to prove and the hope to push for top-nine or even top-six usage. Thornton is a more natural centre than Kerfoot, and only a fool would question his passion or wisdom, but as the oldest forward in the NHL, how much can he contribute on the ice?

We’d be foolish to write Opening Night lines in ink at this point, with Dubas purposely loading up for a competitive camp and constructing one heck of a taxi squad, and with coach Sheldon Keefe happy to Vitamix his units not just game-to-game but period-to-period.This should make the high-budget Marlies much more competitive than their underwhelming 2019-20.

That doesn’t bode well for Robertson’s hopes of making his NHL regular-season debut out of the gate. And that’s why Anderson’s contract is a two-way for two seasons. How fringe forwards like Engvall and Boyd are used will be fascinating and could be in flux all winter.

lukefoxjukebox Give it up Leafsnet! Of course they look refreshed every year, that is because they either don't make the playoffs or are out after the first round! P.S. Golf is not a contact sport!

lukefoxjukebox their wet towel no hit play that shanahan loves so much will ensure they don't go far into the playoffs. i was a believer a few years ago but the way they play, it doesn't matter how much talent they have, the tough gritty teams will demolish them in 7 round series'

lukefoxjukebox A lotta old guys and slower ...

lukefoxjukebox ...and over the CAP

lukefoxjukebox They don’t have the will or class to win

lukefoxjukebox Too bad they are still losers, more balanced but still losers

lukefoxjukebox They look good on paper. But they play on the ice and they look like shit on the ice. And that’s coming from a leafs fan.

lukefoxjukebox Every year its the same thing. They look refreshed and revamped. Every year its a first round exit. Big whoop.

lukefoxjukebox They look like a chuck wagon ..... but with no wagon . Just a bunch of horses running up front . No D , no tendy. The leafs are a trash team with no culture .

lukefoxjukebox Luke Fox also said the Habs were the 15th most improved team in the League and the Leafs were top 5. Homer

lukefoxjukebox Paper doesn't play on the ice. Lol

lukefoxjukebox I hate to admit it, but they may just be improved and this might not just be another off season 'way to go Leafs' article.

lukefoxjukebox Leadsnet always talking nonsense! They apparently just got rid of one down south, when will it be your turn! FFS!

lukefoxjukebox Now, do the NHLFlames

lukefoxjukebox We have improved! Success to follow

lukefoxjukebox Oh here come the Whiners!!!! Funny how the first comments are all from people who can’t stand the Leafs, but just can’t help themselves. And absolutely have to get in on the Leafs news.

lukefoxjukebox Another Laughsnet fairytale! WOW!

lukefoxjukebox Yes Sportsnet plan the parade cuz u repeatedly tell everyone how great the Leafs are . As a subscriber to this network I would wish that u were a bit less partisan.

lukefoxjukebox Every other team in the league right now

lukefoxjukebox And yet, they’ll stumble in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

lukefoxjukebox I'm seeing a first round exit. 👍

lukefoxjukebox

lukefoxjukebox And much, much older.

lukefoxjukebox Worse than last year
