Digital dinner delivery: East Side Mario's robot serving up intrigue in Sydney

SYDNEY, N.S. — Just before customers at the East Side Mario’s restaurant at the Mayflower Mall receive their meal, they’ll hear a slight whir and a somewhat familiar jingle.The machine rolls up to the customers — it knows where many tables are thanks to its sensors and programming. The human waiter or waitress — no longer having to worry about awkwardly carrying several Italian-style meals at once — waits for its arrival at the table.

“See you later,” the machine declares, with a smiling cat on its touchscreen. It zips into the dining room, blasting its pompous accordion-driven tune on its way. The restaurant’s operating partner, Janet MacDonald, said The Robot has been a great addition to the restaurant. Any issues they have are minor; one is where the machine is unable to serve a table when a children’s highchair is placed in the spot it’s programmed to drive through.

The contest opened on Oct. 13, with a Facebook post suggesting The Robot is here to stay. In the post’s comments, some proposed names include “Gustoso,” “Robbie the Robot” and, simply, “Mario.” Sydney East Side Mario's waitress Akansha Mishra serves food from The Robot's tray to patrons on Oct. 12.
