ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — A dental surgeon who allowed a correctional officer to extract an inmate’s teeth during an appointment at his Gander clinic has received an absolute discharge.

Blair Harris was an inmate at the correctional facility in Bishop’s Falls when he was escorted to the Gander Family Dental Clinic for surgery by two correctional officers. According to an agreed statement of facts presented to the court last September, Harris was sedated when Bourget attempted to explain the extraction procedure to the officers before suggesting one of them perform it. Officer Ron McDonald took out four of Harris’ teeth while the second officer took a video of it.

Del Rizzo acknowledged the vulnerability of Harris, who submitted a victim impact statement describing how he suffers from anxiety and fears going to the dentist because of the incident. McDonald, who has also pleaded guilty to assault, is set for a sentencing hearing in June. A charge against the second correctional officer was dropped.
