Activists say discrimination will continue following delay in Ottawa's national action plan to tackle systemic racism facing Indigenous people

Sheila North, the former Grand Chief of Northern Manitoba, said the delay is disheartening as Indigenous people have dealt with racism for generations. In anon Thursday North said it is concerning that some of Canada’s political leaders have said that systemic racism does not exist in the country like it does in the U.S.

"I'm not going to take away what has happened to black people in America, but it happens every day also to black people and Indigenous people and people of colour in Canada," North said. She added that the biggest difference in racism between the two countries is that the recent death of George Floyd, a black man who died after a white police officer held his knee on Floyd's neck for several minutes, was caught on camera.

"We don't know the results of the investigations of that yet or the findings, but it does seem to appear just by optics that there is still this tension between police and indigenous people in Canada," North said. North said she believes that Canada's younger generation has the power to create change, but said it will be challenging given how embedded racism is in the country.

Lol

did anyone expect Trudeau to deliver on his promise to tackle systemic racism facing Indigenous people ? Not me The boy is all talk

As a proud Canadian I am ashamed how we have marginalized and minimalized our native population. Government policies for the last 150 years have been a disaster

Canadians need to commit to redress this as soon as we feel the pandemic is under control as we need to do it right. I can see that a delay maybe in order to make sure it is done right. Let's keep this front and center in our minds. Canada needs to keep this moving!

Activists are professional activists. It will never be enough. Canada is one of the least racist country's on the planet. And Trudeau can shove it for trying to shame people

What's the crime rate in out terms of out of 100 citizens, what's the likelihood a native will commit a violent crime compared to a white or Asian, I bet it's high. Quit passing the blame on what the real issues are, msm miss leads public, they are the enemy of the ppl

White people are also victims of racism.

Systemic racism? Gladue sentencing, tax exempt, free postsecondary. These are all the opposite to the claim of 'systemic oppression'. Historical grievances shouldn't be the only lens, this stokes hate.

A year after MMIW final report, Trudeau government given failing grade for lack of actionThe inquiry concluded that decades of systemic racism had contributed to the deaths and disappearances of hundreds of Indigenous women and girls Well fuck. Trudeau better call for another national inquiry as to why the recommendations of the inquiry aren’t happening. We can all learn and do better by an inquiry into the inquiry. It became very clear early on with this inquiry - It was always about optics and never about action. Yeah. Post this at 2200 EST.
