There were five significant collisions between motorists and pedestrians in Ottawa last week, one of them fatal. In Chelsea recently, a cyclist died as a result of injuries sustained in a collision with a motor vehicle. Three weeks ago, a pedestrian in her 20s was fatally struck by a vehicle on King Edward Avenue, while another woman was seriously injured in the same hit-and-run incident. These are people with friends and family who are now grieving. These are your neighbours.
But other factors should be considered. According to Ottawa Police Service spokesperson Sgt. Amy Gagnon, there are simply more vehicles and pedestrians on our roads now than there were in the last two years. “People have not adapted their ways of driving or walking with that in mind,” she says. “We may have developed some really bad habits . We’re seeing bad behaviour that’s rampant.
In terms of motorists, Gagnon notes that speeding and rolling through or ignoring stop signs also continue to be problems, while incidents of impaired driving are increasing. In the run-up to the municipal election last month, numerous residents and candidates for council listed speeding as among their leading concerns.
Lets think about this. Bike and Car share road, accident bike person dead. Bike and person on side walk, accident, bumps and bruises. Move bikes to one sidewalk, pedestrians on the other, everyone is lives.
