Albertans have to weigh the risk of global climate change against the risk of this rapid decarbonization plan, said Scott Luft, an Ontario-based independent data analyst on public policy in the electricity sector.
Governments keep changing the rules for fossil fuel power plants, such as phasing them out more rapidly, Luft said. This means new ones don’t get built, creating a shortage of supply and driving up prices for consumers. “You’re going to be installing windmills and solar farms in every direction you can imagine,” Zehr said, adding that the cheapest place to install solar is on flat land, which can also be prime farmland. “Just acquiring the land to do it is going to be very expensive.”
When the AESO looked at the cost of attempting a net zero grid by 2035, it estimated the costs as much as $52 billion. This amount strikes Zehr as low, mainly due to global competition to purchase renewable technology. “We’re going to be competing with many other jurisdictions around the world for that equipment.”Article content
