The prime minister who was displaying a superb grasp of political timing and the ability to read what was in the best interests of her nation, her party and her own family was none other than New Zealand’s Jacinda Ardern.

From facing the prospect of electoral defeat, the New Zealand Labour Party has the solid prospect of winning another term in office. It’s not surprising that the Conservative Party under the leadership of Pierre Poilievre is now leading in public opinion polls. If an election were held today these numbers would result in another minority parliament but with the Conservatives holding the most seats. The Liberals might still be able to form a minority government with the support of the New Democrats, but this might require them also gaining the support of the Bloc Quebecois.
