In his moving eulogy at last weekend’s state funeral for former Progressive Conservative prime minister Brian Mulroney, current Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reminded Canadians of an important strategic consideration that guided Mulroney’s policy planning – he always sought to get “the big things right.”
The “big things” Mulroney ultimately got right, though he was despised for them in public polling at the time, was free trade with the United States and the Goods and Services Tax. Of course, the current federal carbon pricing system comes with immediate financial rebates for most Canadians with modest to average incomes, but the federal government has been less than stellar in publicizing this feature of their policy. The current Conservatives led by Pierre Poilievre have, so far, been winning the battle of public opinion in describing the current policy as a “tax gouge.”
