When our then-prime minister John Diefenbaker first met the then aged former British prime minister Winston Churchill, the all-too-often self-righteous Prairie Baptist said to that British giant of a man, “I first saw you when you were in disgrace.” Not missing a beat, Churchill responded, “Which time was that?”

I would suggest politicians stop hiding from and apologizing for matters they neither need hide from or say sorry for to the public. Such responses need only be made privately to those close to them and these are, as well, none of our business. This, as well, should be their reaction to media. Unfortunately, however, they all too often suck up to members of the fourth estate. How often do we hear, “thank you for that great question” or, my favourite, “thank you for having me on your program.
