The staff at a New Jersey restaurant that has been struggling amid the coronavirus pandemic were moved to tears after a regular customer left them a US$1,000 tip.

Arnold Teixeira, owner of The Starving Artist in Ocean Grove, told CNN the customer has been a regular since 2001. He did not want to reveal the identity.

The customer was having breakfast last week at The Starving Artist, which just celebrated its 21st anniversary, when he left the massive tip along with a heartwarming note."We are grateful for your delicious food, warm smiles, and great atmosphere... Please know we appreciate you all very much. It wouldn't be a good summer without the Starving Artist," the tipper added.

The longtime owner of the restaurant, a beloved favorite of the Ocean Grove local and summer crowds, said he wasn't even sure he would be able to keep the business open after the pandemic forced him to close its door in March.

Kind people Kind words Make a big difference everyday ❤🌏❤

Boom! Brilliant!

Here I thought I was being overly kind when I tipped 40%.

Rice and kindness 💓 Hope more rich guy is like that 😂

What's a breakfast pizza?

$3 for a coffee

That’s awesome!!

That 40 dollar breakfast would have been 6 dollars tax here in Canada ....

What’s a breakfast pizza? 🤔

But then they have to share the tip with co workers.

$3 for coffee.... you people who “dine out” are insane.

And put it on the receipt so the guy will have to pay taxes on it. Don't be a dick, tip in cash.

Really cool 😁

Nice.

Now only if our gov would learn from this and assisted small businesses 2 remain afloat instead of leaving them hanging out 2 dry

That is amazing!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Beautiful

Finally some good news.

Wonderful!

Probably better to hand them cash, government just took half of the tip.

👏 this is news apparently.

This is the only reason I’d want to be filthy rich, to do shit like this and make people’s days.

Where you at CTV trolls?

Heat wave the latest challenge to those living in encampments in TorontoPandemic has forced massive reorganization of Toronto homeless into 'tent cities' Saddest part is they could all have a home within a month if the so called advocates weren't always more concerned with exploiting them The fact that Canada has “encampments” of homeless people should ring alarm bells. Maybe the hundreds of millions Trudeau gave to the WHO could have been better spent.
