Politics This Morning: Air execs land in OttawaGood Thursday morning, Transport Minister OMAR ALGHABRA is hosting a summit today devoted to the health of the air transport sector. Billed as the “air sector recovery summit,” the meeting will include representatives of airlines, airports, unions, and other groups for a discussion of “critical issues” facing the sector, according to a press release from Alghabra’s office. The air travel industry had a rough go during the height of pandemic, when border closures, flight cancellations, and health screening delays put pressure on all involved (including employees and travellers.) Last year, the federal government loaned Air Canada more than $1-billion at a charitably low interest rate of 1.2 per cent and took a stake in the airline, in exchange for guarantees that it would refund customers who’d had their flights cancelled, cap executive compensation, and resume flights on less lucrative routes. Transport Minister Omar Alghabra will host his air sector summit at the Canada School of the Public Service in Ottawa. The Hill Times photograph by Andrew Meade What will they be talking about? Domestic industry protections and subsidies of various sorts, certainly. Fees and regulations in one of the country’s most tightly controlled sectors, no doubt. Employment and temporary foreign workers, possibly. The meeting will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Canada School of the Public Service in downtown Ottawa. Alghabra’s office said they expect more than 100 attendees. Emergencies Act double-header This evening, a parliamentary committee struck to investigate the government’s invocation of the Emergencies Act will question the mayors of Windsor, Ont., and Coutts, Alta., as well as lobbying groups for the trucking and vehicle manufacturing industries. (You may recall that the Canadian Trucking Alliance was no fan of the convoy protest movement’s occupation and blockade tactics.)
