Canadian PhD graduate Kritika Vashishtha invented a new colour of light and combined it with artificial intelligence to fool the body into shifting time zones faster — creating a possible cure for jet lag. She tells IDEAS how this method could also help astronauts on Mars.Canadian PhD graduate Kritika Vashishtha invented a new colour of light and combined it with artificial intelligence to fool the body into shifting time zones faster — creating a possible cure for jet lag.

Vashishtha, who completed her PhD in Aerospace Engineering this spring at Toronto Metropolitan University, has created a trick of light that fools human bodies into switching time zones while aboard an aircraft. Kritika Vashishtha works in a laboratory that used to be a passenger airplane. Her mannequin sits in the window seat beside her, while sensors measure the levels of sunlight and cabin lighting reaching Barbara's eyes.

"The beauty of Kritika's research is that she proved that this system works," said Bruce Malek, an industrial designer at Bombardier Aerospace, which contributed to the direction and funding of the project.
