Public salaries have expanded in lockstep with consultancy fees, rising by $3 billion in 2020 alone

The rising expenses come as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faces pressure from some observers to rein in record-high spending levels in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which could include trimming an increasingly bloated public service. The federal public service has swelled by roughly 10,000 bureaucrats per year under Trudeau, to roughly 380,000 today.Article content

Page said higher costs for salaries and consultants fall into a broader debate about “consumption versus investment” in government spending, and how government can allocate taxpayer funds in a way that will create future growth.Posthaste: Why the loonie’s impressive rally against the U.S. dollar is about to come to a rapid end open in new tab

One senior government official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the matter, said rising consultancy costs ultimately “support the big machinery of government” rather than creating jobs or economic productivity. “Shortages in certain employment groups and specific geographic locations make the use of professional services necessary to maintain operations,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

Consultancy services have been used in the past by various governments as a work-around for what is effectively a swelling public sector, wherein higher consultancy costs cover up rising expenditures elsewhere. Specific contracts awarded by the government are listed under general categories like “business services” or “engineering services.”

A list of invoices would be cool. How many of the services were actually ordered to prove or support a decision taken politically, and needed the backup of a “task force” or “independent consulting”?

This has to be the most punchable face on earth

This is professional bureaucracy and political favoritism out of control. What a waste, our country is floundering and we are heading to economic reefs! We need a serious wake up in our political leaders to create value not spend on more administration. Best practices?

It's time for a national probe into the misappropriations of the Trudeau govt.

I would be willing to bet that all these consultants were Liberals.

Will any MSM outlet look into what prior connections exist between the Trudeau Liberals and these 'consultants'? Oh, right ... never mind.

US Firms %?

🤮🤮🤮for how to get vaxxed?

It's well known that the use of 'consultants' has become a bonafide way to launder dirty money.

So that explains why this liberal government has been so productive and accomplished so much over the last 6 years.

Justin loves to spend.....all we do now is wait for the tax increases to pay for it. Thanks everyone!

Get your money back, you got some really bad advise and direction.

This guy is determined to bankrupt our country 🤦🏼‍♀️

And how many where not independent?

The Liberals hired consultants to help them spend shit tons of money.

Consultants often are lower cost than staff because no benefits or union seniority to worry about when job is done.

Tories & Grits hire Consultants it costs Canadian taxpayers billions. the cost should be coming out of Tories, Grits party pockets. you see that their both not any good with taxpayer money. Make them both opposition parties along with Bloc Québécois

Listen, I work as a government consultant. The reality is we do work that senior civil servants should be doing with their comparatively high wages but are either unqualified or too lazy to do. I don’t do Fed Can work - it’s always an inside job for a former dept associate.
