A Conservative push for a parliamentary committee to get to the bottom of why the RCMP decided not to pursue a criminal probe of the prime minister in the SNC-Lavalin affair could yield some answers, but may not go far enough, according to the co-founder of Democracy Watch.
The records show that the RCMP’s national command took from March 2021 until January 2023 to make its decision to conclude the assessment without prosecuting anyone, and that the documents have redacted sections pertaining to the legal reasons for that decision, according to Conacher. Important questions for Conacher include why the RCMP waited so long to make its decision not to prosecute anyone.
