No one is talking about the abrupt departure of director Kathleen Bartels.

A cone of silence dropped over the Vancouver Art Gallery Wednesday after the surprise announcement that long-time director Kathleen Bartels was leaving.

But the sudden nature of her departure was evident in the fact that on the VAG’s website she was still listed as the director Wednesday. “Kathleen is to be commended for all the work that she’s done to bring the gallery so far ahead, certainly operationally,” said Reid Shier of the Polygon Gallery. “It’s a completely different institution now than it was when she started, and a lot of that is due to her.”

Relations between Bartels and prominent collectors like Bob Rennie and Michael Audain were also strained. Much of the ill-will stemmed from Bartels’ dogged pursuit of a new Vancouver Art Gallery building at Larwell Park at Georgia and Hamilton streets.
