Janice Palmer, of North Kentville, asked what the timeline was for the arrival of the shelters, and whether the Exhibition Street site is “a done deal.”
“We are asking for the Pallet project to be paused so that we can all come together to objectively assess all options and to see if this is the best solution for our community as a whole,” Dugie said. Department of Community Services executive director of Homelessness and Supportive Housing Meredith Cowan listens to community concerns at a March 20 meeting at the Kentville fire hall about a Pallet Shelter village coming to North Kentville. KIRK STARRATT - KIRK STARRATTConcerned resident Katherine Bohemier said the problem is that officials are not coming up with solutions to the homelessness crisis, but “only putting a Band-Aid on it.
Bohemier said she treats these people with respect, kindness, and love, “because they deserve it. They deserve more than a Pallet home. They need a solution to not be in the situation to begin with.” Taweel said it’s very clear everyone in the room cared very much and have articulated that, but there is a homeless population in the community who “are not being properly supported.” She said the shelters provide a way to bring those individuals into a secure environment where they can be supported by Open Arms and other service providers.
