Women and children escaping violent situations now have a safe living option in Campbell River that offers short-term stays and permanent housing.
Of those, 36 — deemed “second stage” — come with on-site supports and are intended for short-term stays, while 19 units are intended as permanent housing with affordable rent.“It’s been a long road to completion of this new housing with supports for women and their children in Campbell River, but the outcome makes it all worthwhile,” said Valerie Puetz, the society’s past executive director.
Campbell River Mayor Kermit Dahl said the city is thrilled to have the “much-needed” housing. “These second-stage homes and long-term affordable housing units for women and children will help break the cycle of abuse and provide a safe, secure home for individuals to thrive.” The province invested nearly $21 million in the project through the Building B.C.: Women’s Transition Housing Fund, and will also provide $1 million in annual operating funding.
