Douglas Mitchell, a man whose tireless work in business, sport, and community earned him the nickname \u0022Mr. Calgary,\u0022 has died at age 83.

Mitchell’s wife, former Alberta Lieutenant Governor Lois Mitchell, announced his passing on July 20th in a short statement Thursday. She said he passed away “suddenly and peacefully” at his home.

“We all know Doug was an inspiration to all who knew him and we will continue to share his legacy each and every day,” wrote Lois. “Doug lived an incredibly happy, accomplished and fulfilled life in his 83 years. Doug made an impression on each of us and we find solace in knowing his life was full of joy. We know he would want us all to live on with strength, purpose and laughter.”

Born in Calgary in 1939, Mitchell was well respected for his leadership in business and community. He practiced law and volunteered with numerous Calgary organizations and non-profits including the United Way, SAIT, the Calgary Booster Club, the Calgary Zoo and Theatre Calgary, just to name a few. Mitchell was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2004, and was inducted into the Alberta Order of Excellence in 2007. He was also
