“I don’t think we have a responsibility to fund the business of other leagues.

They have investors, they have a business plan,” he said. “I’ve been pretty clear publicly and in discussions I’ve had with both leagues, and I didn’t believe and don’t believe that the current models are sustainable in the long-term — either one of them. Unfortunately the prophecy was correct for the CWHL.”

I'm hearing that the NHL recently gave the CWHL $100,000 to make sure the players were paid what was owed to them. The help from the NHL came after theSo, does Bettman feel the NHL should step in? Bettman made it clear he believes in the women’s game and the NHL understands the importance of young kids being able to grow up with female role models on the ice. But he acknowledged the idea of an NHL for women is, “even under the best of circumstances, a very challenged business model.”

“I’ve told [NWHL Commissioner Dani Rylan] that if she is successful, we will not interfere. But ultimately it’s on her and her investors to either make a go of this or not and it’s up to the players to decide what they want. But if there is a void, then we will focus on what might be appropriate at the time,” he said.

Finally. Bettman said what needed to be said!

He’s right. It makes 0 sense from a business perspective to fund a league they don’t run.

GaryBettman01 lol u suck bro

Wow..finally this puttz with something good out of his mouth...agree 100%

True, but a 60 game schedule for the NHL would be a positive move 🕶

As much as I hate this clown he’s 100% right. The NHL wouldn’t benefit from it so why would they. Stop being offended and upset because they’re women. If a men’s league folds no one gives a shit? Get over it.

'It’s time to call out the NHL’s recent stance on failing to ⬆️ its funding to the CWHL & NWHL for what it is, an obstructionist ploy that handcuffs both leagues & discourages significant funding from companies who traditionally have invested in hockey'

Contradicting Idiot

Ya you do

Because women don’t buy tickets or merchandise, so why make an effort to attract more of them to the sport. Oh, wait...

That’s true, like it or not.

I dont often agree with Gary.. but it's a business. Not a charity...and the only time anyone cares about women's hockey is if it's a special event.. if it not... it's just family at the games

I love all the people who blame Gary, the NHL Commissioner works for the owners at the end of the day. Besides, businesses should never be forced or pressured to fund a failing business. People can like what they want but I know I have zero interest in watching women’s hockey.

It amazes me how some people can easily suggest other people to spend money that is not theirs. Watching a woman's regular hockey game is as much excitement as watching my neighbor's 12 year old play.

I mean, it would be like asking the NFL to fund the CFL. He's not wrong.

NHL want to run a women's league but on there tearms i get that

Nhl has it's own problems in Arizona Carolina and Florida

I wonder if the 10m dollar players can help out

Go away Bettman

They should buy it. Then put the women's games just before NHL games. Perhaps an original six type format where the women travel with the men (lower costs; No they don't bunk together).

Actually, it is your responsibility to promote and help the game of hockey. Wether played by men, women, or children. The NHL is the highest standard in hockey, use that to build the sport.

You have a responsibility to Hockey fans who fill your bosses pockets no matter gender.

Gary is right, but the NHL is helping to fund the NWHL. I agree that they don’t have to, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t. 🤷🏻‍♂️ whattodo

Women's hockey is dead. Is it because of the PC culture this is sticking around? It's a dumpster fire, be done with it.

Supply vs demand. If it was lucrative and there was a viable market this wouldn’t be an issue. Not a gender issue, quality of the product

Assplug.

I’ve been saying this for awhile now I’m a big supporter of the cwhl but Gary is stating simple business 101 Don’t understand how people aren’t understanding that the only way the NHL is getting involved is if they own it

bettmanSucks

Nice to see common sense in the news for a change.

He got something right for once

Like the perfect corporate Republican / Conservative businessman he is.

Translation: no profit. It’d be cool if they helped though.

And we thank you for your support.

It would be good for business to assist in some way; resources, guideance etc. A large percentage of fans are females and one of the fastest growing sports in the world is female hockey. It makes sense to help and promote both games.

Very easy for you to criticise the decision, but how many of you have bought a jersey? A ticket?

Exactly

Women's hockey + the Olympics are good for hockey, It isn't your responsibility but with your help it could go a long way into growing the game. It wasn't the responsibility of big market teams having to revenue share to keep teams like Florida, Arizona, Carolina afloat either

I may not have much respect for Bettman, but he's right. No one in the mainstream media will say it, but the harsh truth is there's little to no interest in women's hockey beyond other female players & their families. It's simply not at a high enough level & never will be. 🤔

I agree

Really Gary, Well you know the old saying, happy wife happy life, Ladies it’s time to take hockey away from your hubbies and stop paying the nhl, tons of lady fan $ out there to. I’m sure nhl can help. BS. Grow the game.

Gary is a very good businessman but on certain things he needs to look past the profits and look at growing game. Olympics is good for the game of hockey. The NWHL Is good for women’s hockey. Gary, look past the money every once in awhile. League is doing fantastic financially.

He’s right. They don’t have the responsibility to fund it. Doesn’t mean they shouldn’t help significantly. Everybody knows that in order for women’s hockey to thrive the way it should they need the NHL’s financial support. Yes Gary this wouldn’t be a money maker for you.

Grow and develop the game — Increased knowledge and passion for hockey among a broader range of demographics — reap the rewards in future ticket, merchandise and media revenue —- use some of that money to grow the game. IsthismakingsenseGary ?

I think he wants the NWHL to fail so they can safely and without resistance open a women's league under the NHL brand.

Dipshit, women's hockey is amazing. NHL could invest in a women's league and make huge cash... grow interest in both the male and female leagues.

Agreed. However, they should (along with the PA) be doing more for former players need help with better medical and pensions. The NHL should be much more concerned about players long term health from somewhat preventable injuries like concussions.

Doesn’t he have responsibility to grow the game?
