We cannot stop thinking and watching and hoping that earthquake rescue teams can find some alive under the rubble out of the thousands who are still there

Mona Khalil's cousins in Syria are trying to keep their spirits up after they were displaced by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake Feb. 6. Contributed - Mona KhalilMona Khalil was born in Syria and lived in Turkey for five years where she volunteered with refugees. She came to Canada in July 2018 and now lives and works in St. John’s.

Mona Khalil's family sent her photos of their home destroyed by an earthquake that struck parts of Syria and Turkey on Feb. 6. - Contributed My sister, who still lives there, told me that it was shaking hard; that everyone woke up, started screaming, and immediately power went off. People started running on the stairs, hoping to survive with their lives. They were in only their pyjamas, and ran out under the cold rain in the darkness.

My close friend, who lives on the Turkish side, told me that it looked so much like the end of the world — the earth shaking underneath their feet, the sky pouring cold rain mixed with snow, the children screaming, the woman crying.

The earthquake has left massive amounts of damage in buildings, infrastructure, lives and mental health.

Dramatic photos show how roads shifted in Turkey as earthquake now ranks as worst since HaitiRail lines suddenly bent into S-curves. Roads split laterally. And a 200-metre-wide chasm opened between rows of trees in an olive grove. Not too different from the roads in Ottawa. With Erdoğan's executive government it doesn't shock me. Canada's infrastructure is going the same rout. Trudeau just helps highlight it. Unless you are in the matrix
