We note that the assessment process she underwent allowed her to reflect on, and ultimately accept, her own identity, that of a cis-gender gay woman. It is important to note this is the opposite of conversion therapy, a brutal, now illegal practice intended to convert people to cis and hetero normativity.
It is known and widely acknowledged that often childhood questions about gender identity do not persist into adulthood. The Cass Review did not show us that. On the other hand, trans adults have told us that they knew about their gender identity from a young age, 80 per cent before the age of 14. Suggesting that all youth presenting with questions about gender identity require mental health assessments inappropriately pathologizes gender diversity. It is not a disease. However, the co-occurrence of mental health issues and neurodiversity does need careful attention and assessment within a person-centred and gender diversity-positive setting.
