In Alberta the most amusing news story of the post-election period has been the slightly desperate quest for a way to represent the province, or possibly the region, in the Trudeau cabinet. Alberta elected four Liberal MPs in 2015, and I regret to say they didn’t have a very good run, considered as a group. One, Darshan Kang, was accused of sexual harassment and ejected from caucus; a second, Kent Hehr, had to resign from cabinet after harassment allegations surfaced.
In a way, it was a miniature reiteration of European immigration to the New World. The most “American” individuals from what was originally the more crowded place crossed over, and became a distinct, self-defining population. But of course this process has reversed over the past 30 years: socialism lost prestige even in Saskatchewan, and the perpetual westward brain drain became a source of psychic pain whose exploitation Brad Wall mastered.
So who will speak for Buffalo in Ottawa’s corridors of power? My instinct is that this question is being asked mostly outside Buffalo. The best quip was made, I hate to say, while I was assembling this column: my Edmontonian friend Dave Cournoyer, who is no Conservative, tweeted “I’m pretty sure that Albertans sent a clear message that they don’t want representation in Justin Trudeau’s cabinet.” It’s a joke with the citrusy tang of truth.
colbycosh *A bill that virtually shuts down the oil industry in Alberta *A bill that stops oil tankers on BC coast only *A PM that favours and pits Quebec against the west and primarily Alberta *A PM who says Quebecers are better that the rest of Canada
