Cody Hodgson played six seasons in the NHL before tests showed his liver and kidney were damaged. He stopped playing hockey. He was 26. These days, Hodgson is attempting an improbable return to the NHL with Milwaukee of the American Hockey League. The health issues that drove former NHL forward Cody Hodgson away from hockey eight years ago were frightening enough for him to fear the worst.
Hodgson instead was diagnosed with malignant hyperthermia, which is related to a mutation on the RYR1 gene that assists with muscle contraction. The condition can result in high body temperature, a rapid heart rate and/or muscle spasms. "We're interested in potentially doing a case report on him because it is so unusual that he would have had such a severe manifestation of this disease and then to come back and be basically asymptomatic," Goldberg said. "What are the lessons learned from this lesson that you could apply to other people who have a similar condition?"After leaving the NHL, Hodgson said he kept his hockey gear stored for about five years.
"I just had a sneaky feeling that this was the right thing to do," said Scott Nichol, general manager of the Admirals and director of player development for the Predators. "He didn't go out the way he wanted to go out. He's got the love back. He's healthy. When I talked to him on the phone, the energy through his voice and how excited he was to just get an opportunity to practice.
