Sweden did not enforce lockdowns to prevent COVID-19 spread across the country and was scrutinized for the lax measures. While officials claim that people have built “herd immunity against the virus,” the numbers suggest otherwise.
Sweden recorded the highest number of deaths in the first half of 2020 due to COVID-19, according to the country’s official statistics office. From Jan. to June the country had a total of 51,405 fatalities resulting from COVID-19. Currently, the country has more than 80,000 COVID-19 cases with a death tally of more than 5,908,But that is not stopping Thunberg from going back to school, who sparked a global youth-led protest movement after striking outside the Swedish parliament in 2018.
In a Reuters interview in July, Thunberg said people in power had practically given up on handing over a decent future to coming generations. With Europe beginning to emerge from coronavirus lockdowns, there have been calls for the EU’s recovery fund to be used to promote a transition to a “green” economy.
Meeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel last week, Thunberg called on her to step out of her “comfort zone” and speed up action to fight the climate emergency.
