The City of Hamilton says it has discovered sewage has been leaking into the Hamilton Harbour since 1996 because of a hole in a combined sewage pipe in the industrial sector.

The City of Hamilton says sewage has been leaking into the Hamilton Harbour since 1996.The City of Hamilton says it has just discovered sewage has been leaking into the Hamilton Harbour for 26 years because of a hole in a combined sewage pipe in the industrial sector. But Nick Winters, director of Hamilton Water, told reporters on Tuesday afternoon "it's going to be a big number," adding the city will publicly release the number as soon as they have it.

"It appears the consultant involved in that work was under the impression all the sewers in that area were storm sewers and they designed a direct connection to a box culvert that leads out to Hamilton Harbour," he said. What is impacted by the sewage spill? Winters said staff contacted the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks Spills Action Centre at 12:20 p.m. ET Tuesday and reported it to the city's spill reporting line.

Mayor Andrea Horwath told reporters Tuesday she asked the auditor to complete a review and release a public report about what may have happened. "It's important for Hamiltonians to get information as quickly as possible," she said, adding she learned of the situation between 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. She spoke to media on the matter shortly after 5 p.m.

I feel like this would be a missed opportunity if I didn’t state the obvious. The CBC has been spewing raw sewage for years and no one bats an eye.

🤢disgusting

and you just saw this now 😡😡👎🏻

I wouldn't recommend anyone swim in Lake Ontario, ever. That water is so very far from clean.

Hamilton just can’t seem to get it together. Lots of corruption

teach_n_travel Oh, not surprised, it always smelt like poop whole driving by

And how is this any different than the millions of gallons of raw sewage the liberal government is allowing Quebec to dump into the Saint Lawrence every single day? Fix it all!

Too funny.

Another reason for floating toilet paper. For more information see my patented enterprise. Montreal would be a brown out. cdnpoli

So take a look as to while this hasn’t been checked regularly

Damn those oil pipelines, tho....

What about that steel mill greenhouse gas emitter sitting on great waterfront land for 112 years? You don't have to swim in Hamilton harbour but you can't avoid breathing. Is it worth the $70K+ employees make? Move it out of the city.

Nice work. 26 years.

Ah shit

How do they differentiate this from the sewage coming out of Andreas mouth

Jeeze between leaky pipes and the Red Hill cover up, Hamilton's going to go broke

😆 hammertime

And nobody noticed because Hamilton Harbor is already Canada’s largest toxic waste sewer.

Crap. Ewwwww

Was wondering why the water tasted a little nutty.

I swam in Lake Ontario as a child and then teo decades later never once got sick while travelling in Southeast Asia or South America. The water changes you. One day my third ear shall emerge and I will hear the universe.

It kind of feels like inspections of these pipes should be done more than every quarter century.

Yah because they never knew. They got caught. Big difference!

Now lets see how many political blind eyes we can find, if its less than a hundred, I will eat my hat, if I can find it.

The timing is such an amazing coincidence, just after Hamiltonians voted out many of the secretive old guard on city council—who kept the Chedoke Creek sewage spill secret—and new councilors are coming in. How weird that the city just happened to 'discover' a 26-year sewage leak.

Go figure. I wonder how long they knew about it.

Bahahahahaha

Sad

We know. It’s been leaking into Tam’s office for years as well. It’s where they find the $cience, and all the scary Variants 🤡🇨🇦

😫

Duh

Thank God I Never Drank The Water There

🤢

At least they came clean when they did. Don't punish the mayor for this Hamilton. Unless it is their fault, yknow.

No Shit?!

only one?

Just keeping up with Montreal.

This is the direction of the flow of water in Lake Ontario. Did it impact municipal intakes?

Nice 🙄

This is not news! We’ve known about this for years! Why is it coming up as new? Not unknown, overlooked! I am shocked that AndreaHorwath has not been aware of this situation until now. It’s been 20 years since I lived there and knew about it then. A passerby.

26 billion litres wasn’t enough SewerGate

And the people of Toronto have been drinking it for the last 26 years!

In other words, they knew about it in 1996 and did nothing to fix it? 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Do Swan Lake next!

SewerGate….

Great inspection setup they have in Hamilton

Only just discovered but know it was leaking for 25 years? 🤔 Ya ok! Sounds like they were caught hiding something from the public! Now in panic mode! Maybe you should just plug the hole with AndreaHorwath! She is sht anyway!!

That really stinks

No surprise to me. Even before the new skyway was built, you didn't want to have that water come in contact with your skin. The Harbour is infested with gulls, and I am amazed that the GTA has not taken measures to eliminate an excess of gulls and geese, adding to the sewage.

I always use to wonder why thier water is black in colour 🤔

Are we really surprised?

PeePee says get rid of the gatekeepers. This stuff should be normal.

What’s the big deal. The city I live in pumped shit into the ocean for two hundred years.

Shitty.

The armpit of Ontario living up to its moniker.

But dumping raw sewage intentionally into our Canadian waters gets a free pass? Google wasn’t invented yesterday

Then fix it asap plz

It’s weird they should of just know by the smell. I guess if your use to it you go “ahhhh my Hamilton”

Well, do NOT ask Montreal for a solution!! 😏

Hey….I already had my reasons to not go swimming in the harbour or Lake Ontario.
