Chrystia Freeland appointed deputy prime minister: Here’s what that means

Deputy prime minister, the new cabinet role resurrected from political history for Chrystia Freeland, has traditionally been offered by prime ministers as they get on in years and build up a little political mud on their boots.

There is a longer history of the position in Britain, but the same pattern of a leader enjoying a few years alone in the big chair before inviting someone to occupy it in their absence, or take questions in the House in their place, as in the governments of Harold Macmillan, Margaret Thatcher and John Major.

Before today’s announcement about Freeland, the last time Canada had a deputy prime minister was under Martin, who named as his deputy Anne McLellan, the former cabinet minister from Edmonton whom Trudeau last month named as an adviser on Western issues, which Freeland is now set to manage. Freeland’s new posting can be interpreted in different ways. On one view, it is a recognition not only of Freeland’s success on the foreign file, but also that the most urgent issue facing the new Trudeau government is not in the more elite portfolios of finance or global affairs.
