Scorecard: Director of Public Prosecutions Kathleen Roussel and deposed attorney general Jody Wilson-Raybould, who so resolutely backed her, 1, SNC-Lavalin 0.
It was that decision the company sought to overturn at the Federal Court; it also wanted Roussel to be ordered to invite SNC to the table. The RCMP alleges that between 2001 and 2011, SNC-Lavalin and two of its wholly owned subsidiaries paid almost $48 million to Libyan public officials to influence government decisions on contracts.
In other words, the “protecting Canadian jobs” mantra adopted by the PM, Clerk of the Privy Council Michael Wernick and the PM’s former principal secretary, Gerry Butts, as justification for pressuring Wilson-Raybould to overrule Roussel and invite SNC to the table, is verboten by law in the current case.
The great advantage of DPAs to troubled companies is that it spares them the possibility of a criminal conviction
Now THIS is the good that can come out of something terrible.
Revocable AG appointment by commons under unwhipped vote requiring 2/3 majority?
Federal officials “were trying to get the AG to do something that was illegal,” Mr. Smith said. “How else can you interpret it? Because there is no way SNC-Lavalin could have met the criteria.” Liberals and Quebec are criminals....
acoyne This is a discussion for after the current mess is sorted, nobody should be distracted from what has happened
acoyne The title not representative of article, and one assumes not chosen by author blatchkiki. More accurately, PMO & Clerk tried to interfere with DPP/justice. But for title, an excellent article.
Will they be as independent as independent senators?
It does seem to make sense, doesn't it - but, I'm still not sure. How did we manage all these years without it ever being a problem, or did all other governments and AGs just simply work it out (as these most recent ones should have)?
No, the system worked well for 150 years until Trudeau and his Cronies broke the law, sec 139 Criminal Code of Canada, It is defined as any attempt, in any manner, to obstruct, pervert or defeat a judicial proceeding...buying into changing the system is a liberal scam...
blatchkiki Thank you Stephen Harper for creating the Public Prosecution Service of Canada (PPSC). Thankfully, the independence was created so that the only way to interfere was to break the law.
John Mc Callum interference in Huawi Scott Briton resigns over Mark Norman breach of trust charge Butts resigns over SNC lavalin DPA This pattern of judicial interference needs a RCMP inquiry
Like the clerk of the privy council wernick...no thanks
The fact that the AG isn't an independent post shows how flawed and out dated the British Parliamentary system really is.
Maybe that's where JWR should have started instead of launching a flame thrower on the LPC.
