On issue after issue, Trudeau spent the debate on the defensive — and never really got much of a chance to go on the offensive, in part thanks to moderator Shachi Kurl’s insistence the leaders stay on topic.
If there were no memorable moments or turning points in these televised spectacles, historians may nevertheless view 2021’s election debates as something of a nadir in the history of Canadian debating. The frenetic, multi-journalist proceedings of Wednesday night’s official French event and Thursday’s official English version rarely resembled anything that anyone from a debating culture would recognize as debate — and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Was this debate substantially different from previous debates in the last 20 years? Or did nobody really care about debates to watch before? Not really sure what this 'all-time low' is relation to.
Right. Leaders of their Party; not easy to envision any as leaders of Canada. We deserve better.
When asked about affordability crisis, all four of them said they will give free money & extra cash to elders. No one said why cost of living went up & how they will fix it. No one said about reducing tax for middle class or increasing tax for ultra rich (except NDP). Shame !!!
