This comes as no surprise. On all manner of important files, Canadian governments are essentially flying blind for want of data. You can see the attraction for politicians: If data shows your strategy isn’t working, suddenly you’ve got a dozen reporters barking questions at you. Without data, you can just claim it’s working and they can’t prove otherwise. The NP Comment newsletter from columnist Colby Cosh and NP Comment editors tackles the important topics with boldness, verve and wit.
Infrastructure Canada also knows occupancy at shelters serving families has increased markedly since 2016, and that “the number of refugees or refugee claimants using shelters was four times greater than it was in 2014,” Horgan reports. But with many billions left to spend between now and 2027, Infrastructure Canada didn’t spend any time “examining why this was happening.”
But it’s not as if they were just throwing room keys at people on the street. They knew how many people were being helped, and who they were, and the basic details of their situations. There is certainly no excuse at this point for data collection to be three years behind — but then, anyone who has ever gone looking for bog-standard Canadian statistics knows that “three years behind” is pretty good, relatively speaking.
You mean like normal. This was planned $78.435B will end up in the friends pockets with a 10% kick back to the minister. 🤡🎪
Too low, if they had spent 79 billion then homelessness would be solved.
Greed dominates real-estate and this greed factor is instilled in Politicians,friends/buddies,family members. Homelessness is a complex problem, many have mental health concerns. Governments at all levels proven to be incompetent in developing a workable solution.
War on poverty , war on drugs , war on whatever just a black hole to endlessly throw money into to achieve zero results because nothing is based on performance just feelings.
Indeed they are considering housing is a provincial matter.
Here’s a nice stat Spending $8 billion/year and Canada has 35,000 homeless people on any given night = $230,000 spent per homeless person per year or $19,000 per month I’d like to know how it’s spent.
Most useless government we have ever had.
78.5 billion ? I would like to know how many immigrants end up homeless and need affordable housing? As a tax payer I am tired of paying 10s of thousands of dollars in taxes. We work hard for our money and go without in order to pay our taxes and service we don't benefit from.
80 B$ with no way to measure its effectiveness. How Trudeau is that. Good god we need new management in Ottawa. cdnpoli topoli
