Centre Street Bridge's lower deck reopening to Calgary motorists yyc

Ward 7 Coun. Terry Wong says cars will be back on the roadway as soon as this Tuesday when the pathway is set to close to pedestrians. With construction at the north and south ends of the bridge stalled until summer, he said there’s no need to leave the roadway closed and noted that it provides an important connection to Chinatown and downtown businesses.

“At the start of COVID when we closed that bridge, a lot of the Chinatown businesses starved,” said Wong, who served as the executive director of the Chinatown BIA at the time. In addition to people going to Chinatown businesses in person, Wong said a lot of food delivery drivers rely on the route and restaurants saw a marked decline in orders due to lengthier wait times as drivers circumnavigated to the Edmonton Trail or 10th Street crossings.Article content

“They lost a lot of business because people were just saying we can’t wait for the driver to take that long,” he said. While there are pedestrian walkways on the upper deck of the bridge — accessible at its south end from the River Walk — they connect to the city’s pathway network farther north on Centre Street than the Memorial Drive and Bow River Pathway-linked lower deck.

“I found to be the most direct link from Sunnyside to downtown over the past couple of years,” said cyclist Matthew Hicks. “It’s such a nice connection because it’s level and doesn’t have really any conflict issues. It’s covered from the snow and you get great views of the city from it.”Article content
