Former CBRM mayor John Coady has passed away at 77. He served as the municipality's first mayor from 1995 to 1997.Sydney, N.S. — Flags at city hall are flying at half-mast in honour of the first-ever mayor of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality who has died at the age of 77.Coady stepped into the spotlight on May 13, 1995, when he was first mayor-elect of the newly created Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

Darren Bruckschwaiger, the elder stateman of the present CBRM council, was a longtime friend of Coady’s. “I helped him on the first campaign for mayor of the amalgamated municipality,” recalled Bruckschwaiger. “He was an excellent leader and the best person to start off the new regional government. He had the right experience to be our first mayor. I’m proud to have known him, he was a truly great fellow.”Former CBRM chief administrative officer Jerry Ryan worked with Coady when the latter was the warden of the former County of Cape Breton and when he was the CBRM’s first mayor.

“John’s intelligence and attention to detail were the two qualities that I remember most about him,” said Ryan. “On a personal level, he was both a friend and mentor. I will miss him dearly.” Coady is survived by his wife of 21 years, Sandy Rendell, children Michael , Angela , Doug and Sarah Jane along with eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by siblings Joseph, Lalie and Patricia.
