Canadian Catholic dioceses have failed for years in upholding promises made to residential school survivors. Will Pope Francis' visit change that?

“It was a weasel clause,” the former Manitoba regional chief of the Assembly of First Nations said in a recent interview. In total, that fundraising campaign raised less than $4 million. It made up one piece of the compensation package Catholic entities agreed to pay under the settlement struck in 2006 with Ottawa, former students and Indigenous leaders.

Now, bishops are preparing for the impending arrival of Pope Francis, who is expected to apologize for the Roman Catholic Church's role in operating residential schools. Bishops are members of a national assembly called the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops. The group has said it wasn't a party to the original settlement where the “best efforts” fundraiser originated, but nonetheless acknowledged its failure and said it drew important lessons from what happened.

For Archbishop of Regina Don Bolen, who oversees a diocese that includes 25 First Nations communities, it's all about building relationships and prioritizing the work of reconciliation. The archdiocese has set a goal of contributing $2 million over five years, $1.5 million of which it has hit, he said.

NOPE!

Maybe they can get off their lazy asses and solve thier own problems like every other society.

🥲

Any word on the mass graves discovered? It’s been a year now but they haven’t confirmed if they found anything aside from anomalies 🤷🏼‍♂️

No.

If Canadian bishops are anything like American bishops, they'll completely ignore what the Pope wants.

No, until he turns over all the criminals.

No.

No…

Will Pope Francis' visit change that? Hell no!

catholic's are :

Probably not.

pfffft .. good luck w. that cult crap it's 2022.. ~ ~ !? all bad all ugly

No. The Vatican didn't even properly consult with Indigenous people when they planned their P.R. apology tour.

...Isn't this the guy that said it'd be wrong to say there's a 'wrong' side in the Russian invasion of Ukraine?

I don't know what the Holy Father is thinking. He cannot do more than prior Popes have. Canada is becoming a very dangerous place. Even with our violence epidemic, Canada tops it all off. Catholics have been killed.

99.9% nope.

Only education will help the indigenous community, not money. We have spent millions over the decades and nothing has changed!

Let's be realistic. Is this a real question?

Probably not. Wounds like that never heal.

Meanwhile the Church owns a fortune in real estate property.

You can sit and wait, honey. The Roman Catholic Church only took 359 years in formally apologizing to Galileo Galilei for formulating scientific theories it considered heresy, like, for example, he saying that the Earth is round.

Survivors. Oh, please. They went to school. I would like some money for being sent to school.

Maybe they used the money to pay off the Priest's Gambling debts. No joke

'Will Pope Francis' visit change that?' are you kidding?

Nah. Just more god gibberish!

No. The pope blames the west for Putin’s war on Ukraine. He does no good.

Wouldn't count on it.

Why do they preach the bible but act against all that it says?

It’s always about the money.

Maybe Trudeau should get some of the clean water there he promised rather than always tossing cash. And no the church will do nothing but virtue signal. It will help no one. An apology is wanted but money is wanted more.

Maybe the church should sell off some of its assests bought with money taken from the poorest of their 'followers', in the guise of 'donations'. Shameful, capitalist organization.

You realize this is the opportunity to deflect blame to the catholic church and away from the govts that imposed the residential schools in the first place..including Trudeau Sr., Chretien and others..🤔

Will Gerry Butts get a visit with the Pope to explain why church burnings from the liberal perspective were 'understandable'? 🤔

Who is still catholic anyway? I mean all the dark history of child abuse and killing in the name of god. 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️

I'm not sure throwing more money at them is the answer. Didn't Trudeau jack up finding to native communities, and it all disappears without solving any problems?

Them to move on people.......

Perhaps start by realizing that the government is the one to blame.

Reparations!

The Catholic Church doesn't need to raise money. What a joke.

It’s always about the money with the natives isn’t it?

Holocaust survivors mark 80 years since mass Paris roundupFor the dwindling number of survivors of France's wartime crimes, commemoration ceremonies Sunday are especially important. At a time of rising antisemitism and far-right discourse sugarcoating France's role in the Holocaust, they worry that history's lessons are being forgotten. And yet Nazis are good guys now. Is the west gonna rewrite the history books too?
