The only possible connection to the virus the woman could recall was an incident a decade before her diagnosis when she shared manicure tools with an HIV-infected cousin. The woman, who would have been just 12 years old then, said she was not aware her older relative had the virus at the time.
While the study shows the importance of getting an HIV test no matter how small the risk of infection might seem, people certainly don’t need to cross their fingers every time they go for a mani-pedi, said Uriel Felsen, the medical director of HIV counselling and testing at the HIV/AIDS Center at Montefiore Medical Center in New York. “This is the first time that I have seen something as close to a confirmed case of HIV being transmitted through shared manicure utensils,” he said.
