With official channels jam\u002Dpacked, multiple Calgary organizations have stepped up to fill in the gaps for evacuees fleeing Yellowknife.

Be it the need to accommodate pets, replace forgotten essentials or find alternative options for their temporary accommodations, Calgarians are stepping up for their neighbours, says Hillhurst United Church executive director Anne Yates-Laberge.

“I think our role in society is to care for one another. End of story,” she said. “Our role as a church has been to facilitate just a little slice of kindness.” Dorothy Butler, 68, was evacuated from Yellowknife with her cat Tiger and dog Willow on a WestJet flight that arrived at Calgary International Airport on Thursday, August 17, 2023.Executive director Melissa David said roughly 90 per cent of those pets have come from Yellowknife, but they’ve seen folks from Kelowna and other B.C. wildfires seeking assistance as well.Article content
