“I am satisfied that any adverse effects or significant environmental effects of the undertaking can be adequately mitigated through compliance with the attached terms and conditions,” said Halman. According to Municipal, the pit is used to supply gravel for local construction and highway maintenance done by the Department of Public Works. The pit has been in use since 2010.
Most concerns were brought forward by government departments. Reports released by the Department of Environment and Climate Change deemed noise pollution and the disturbing of the habitats of animals in the area as issues to address during expansion. With conditions to ensure Municipal follows provincial rules, involved departments said the expansion won’t harm fragile nearby habitats such as wetlands. Several lakes lie near the pit as well.
