The website NHL Injury Viz compiles a stat called Cap Hit of Injured Players aka CHIP — the per-game cap charge of a player missing a game through injury/illness, i.e. annual cap charge divided by 82. It’s a nice, tidy metric, since in general the more you make, the bigger your apparent impact on the lineup.

But the data tells us the problem actually was bigger than consistently losing their two defensive mainstays.
