SYDNEY, N.S. — Although it’s tucked away somewhat anonymously on the western side of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, the Cape Breton Cancer Centre has been a beacon of hope for tens of thousands of patients and their families since opening its doors in 1998.
Valerie Nugent, director of the Cape Breton Cancer Centre, said on a typical day 150 patients may come through the centre where a staff of 100 cancer-care specialists help them through their diagnosis. “When you asked that … all I could think about was community and how well patients do when they're home in their own communities to heal and to go through this journey. And having this centre here at home and care close to home is really important to the patients and the families. And that's what I think about when I think of this centre.”
Dr. Elwood MacMullin, medical director of the Cape Breton Cancer Centre. Chris Connors/Cape Breton Post - cc“I've come in from outside and I can tell you I have never seen a cancer centre run the way this centre runs. It's very community-focused. To me, I hope it brings patients hope and comfort that they have this resource close. It's providing care that the patients deserve. Cancer is a very difficult thing to go through.
