The Canadiens have signed 2019 first-round pick Cole Caufield to a three-year, entry-level contract.

The deal will pay the 20-year-old $700,000 at the NHL level this season and $832,500 at the NHL level in both 2021-22 and 2022-23. The Stevens Point, Wis., native will also receive a $92,500 in all three years of the deal and can earn up to $300,000 in performance bonuses.

According to Sportsnet's Eric Engels, Caufield will be assigned to the AHL's Laval Rockets when he arrives in Canada. Caufield just finished his final season at the University of Wisconsin, leading the Big Ten division in scoring with 30 goals and 52 points in 31 games. He was also named the Big Ten Player of the Year and a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award after leading the Badgers to the regular season champions title.

The Canadiens selected Caufield in the second round of the 2019 NHL Draft and has represented the United States at the 2021 World Junior Hockey Championship where he had five points in seven games helping them capture the gold medal.
